WAVELENGTH – The ID Newsletter of India – April
2005
****************************************************
Hello Friends,
Welcome to this issue of Wavelength, the monthly e-Newsletter for
the Instructional Design and Content Development community of India.
April is when we unwind after running hard to meet the March 31
deadlines; it is also the time to review the work done in the previous
year and learn from it.
During March, the most heard seasonal buzzword was "productivity."
Everyone, right from the lonely top of the hierarchical pyramid
to its vast and sturdy bottom, talked about it. Friends, the focus
of this issue is "Taming the Productivity Dragon."
We will position the camera right over your left shoulder, and
see how Instructional Designer is the real director of the productivity
show.
There is of course a lot more to the productivity story than what
we have uncovered here; do share your ideas, experience, and knowledge.
I shall look forward to your emails.
All the Best!
Thanks and Warm Regards,
Shafali R. Anand

Mystery of the Month
***********************
The mystery that we set out to unravel in April is how we, the
Instructional Designers can tame the productivity dragon. "Taming
the Productivity Dragon" is the tip of the huge iceberg called
the Instructional Designer’s potential.
In this Wavelength article (http://www.vibrantwavelength.com/productivity.htm
) we will explore some of the ways in which the Instructional Designer
can impact the overall course productivity.
Your opinions and ideas are welcome. They shall be published in
the May issue of Wavelength, so please write to me and share your
wonderful ideas that can help the whole ID community.

Resources – Writing Style
--------------------------
When you are writing to publish on net, there are a few guidelines
that you'd do well to follow. Often we tend to overlook these...causing
confusion without knowing why. Please check http://www.faqs.org/faqs/usenet/writing-style/part1/
I implore you to add http://webster.commnet.edu/mla/index.shtml
to your favorites (if it isn't already there.) This site provides
guidelines on various issues such as using quotation, citations,
writing style, grammar, and so on. There is a lot of information
here that can be referred to in times of doubt.

Resources – Language & Culture
------------------------------
This month we are homebound. Check http://www.answers.com/topic/gurukul
to read about some Indian concepts that have shaped our culture
through the ancient and medieval times.
If you are planning to write for the US audience or visit the US,
check out this site. http://www.edupass.org/culture/
is a collection of all culture issues that you may encounter.

For those who like things to be in order, who love to see everything
neatly packaged in the tight compartment called "definition,"
here are some cool definitions of Instructional Design.
Check out http://www.umich.edu/~ed626/define.html.
The one that I find succinct, pithy, crisp, and practical is "Instructional
Design as a Science."
If you've found yourself crumpling sheets after sheets of paper,
tossing them in the wastebasket, and wondering if there was a simple
gizmo that will write the objectives for a course; fret no more...click
on http://www.nwlink.com/~donclark/hrd/templates/objectivetool.html
and let your creativity flow. You will also find ensconced in the
page, a link for the verbs that can be used to write objectives.
You are on your way to becoming an "Objective-Genius."

Site of the Month
******************
Site of the Month for April is http://www.discovery.com/
Why?
Well here are some of the reasons. Click on the link to discover
the others.
1. Check out the neat layout of the content. The basic links are
just where your eye would expect them to be. The "networks"
on the left, advertisements on the right, and content in the middle.
2. Subtle use of Flash complete with Video and Audio. The left
menu as well as the middle section softly rolls down on the screen.
The menus keep building while you take in the content.
3. The middle section is presented in two columns. The left side
is given to the "Video of the Day" and the right side
to "What's Hot?" Check out the smooth scroller menu at
the bottom of "Video of the Day" sub-section.
4. The use of complementary colors does not allow monotony to set
in.
5. The videos are embedded in Flash and the loading is real fast.
6. Check out the cool rollovers on the left panel buttons.
7. Last but not the least; the depth of content on the site is
just phenomenal. Each network link leads to the corresponding discovery
sub-domain.
Enjoy.
