----------------------- NEWS! ---------------------------
Wavelength Launches the IDSP - Online!
An Online ID Course for Senior Professionals
Details at: http://www.vibrantwavelength.com/idsp_online.htm
---------------------------------------------------------

Hello Friends,

Welcome to this issue of Wavelength.

As the Monsoon packs her bags and her eyes shed the parting
showers that cool us, making us ready to welcome the Autumn;
the leaves turn greener, and the trees grow shadier.

It is the time to contemplate new growth...it is the time to
harness new energy...and so it is also the time to decide
where the energy should be spent. Where the training
department's energy should be spent, is the question that is
the prime concern of most training managers.
This month's Mystery of the Month article focuses on the
relationship between performance and training.

At Wavelength, we've been busy working on polishing the next
online gem that would interest the Senior Professionals of
the eLearning and Training industry. I would like to thank

NEW*** IDSP Online - The ID Course for Senior Professionals
***********************************************************
The IDSP Online (Instructional Design for Senior Professionals
Certificate course,) from Wavelength addresses the
instructional design needs of the Senior Professionals. It is
a two-month course that will help the Senior Professionals
structure the vast storehouse of practical knowledge that
they've acquired over a period of time.

The details of this course are available at: http://www.vibrantwavelength.com/idsp_online.htm
but here is a synopsis for your convenience. This course is
of interest to all those professionals who are currently
working as:

*Senior/Training Managers
*Senior/eLearning Project Managers
*Instructional Design Reviewers/Analysts
*Senior Trainers
*Sales/Marketing Managers
*Lecturers/Readers/Professors

It is important that the applicants have more than 4 years of
experience in any of the following areas:

*eLearning
*Training
*Education

This course is designed to address your need to learn instructional
design, analyze instructional design problems in relation to your
work, and come up with instructionally sound solutions within
moments. It assumes that you have ample experience to evaluate and
map the instructional design concepts to your work, and that you
have moved beyond designing courses and writing scripts personally.

The first session of IDSP Online shall begin on November 01, 2007
and end on December 31, 2007. If this course interests you,
write to us at idsponline[at]vibrantwavelength[dot]com

Mystery of the Month
***********************
The operations department of most organizations would usually
like to have the training department conduct a training
program as the panacea for all performance-related ills. In
such a situation, the training manager is caught between the
client's demands and the trainer resource crunch.
The good news is that many performance issues are not training
issues at all. Ironically, the bad news is that such performance
issues are beyond the ambit of the training department's scope of work.
These non-training performance issues are monkeys that no
department or department personnel wants on his or her back.

This month's Mystery of the Month article,
"A New Leaf - Performance Vs. Training" discusses this issue.

ID Concepts
--------------------
http://www.personal.psu.edu/users/m/r/mrs331/idm.htm is an
interesting page for those who want to compare the different
instructional design models in existence, with ADDIE; and
determine which enchants them the most. Among those listed,
the Dick & Carey model and the Morrison, Ross, and Kemp
model would be familiar to instructional designers and trainers
respectively. The project managers may want to take a closer
look at the Seels and Glasgow model.

-----------------------------------
Language & Culture
------------------------------------
"The Impact of Electronic Communication on Writing" at
http://reading.indiana.edu/ieo/digests/d188.html discusses how
the electronic means of communication has influenced our writing
behavior as well as writing performance. If we treat technology
(the online world) as culture, we should be able to draw some
interesting inferences here. The web-culture is universal and
breaks the regional cultural taboos in many respects. Read
this article for a fresh viewpoint.

An abstract from the Encyclopedia Britannica, which is available
at http://www.appiusforum.com/scripts.html, discusses the
historical development of the Indian scripts. Check it out.

------------------------------
Writing Style
------------------------------
Language is defined as: "Communication of thoughts and
feelings through a system of arbitrary signals, such as
voice sounds, gestures, or written symbols."
(Source: http://www.thefreedictionary.com/language)

Our writing style is our characteristic way of using
language so that the "communication" becomes more interesting,
intriguing, and clear. Read "Writing Well" by Dan Simmons
at http://www.dansimmons.com/writing_welll/archive/2006_01.htm
This seven-installment guide is written in style...I am
confident that it will keep you engaged:)

Learning Content Creation Technologies

If you are new to mobile content creation, read
"Creating Web Content for Mobile Phone Browsers" at
http://www.oreillynet.com/pub/a/wireless/2004/02/06/mobile_browsing.html
This article was written in 2004, so it may not be as
technologically relevant today, but it does provide an
overview of how content is created for mobile learning.

The beginning of this article is of general interest, but
the latter part is technical and may be of more interest
to the programmers.

--------------------------------------------------------------
Learning Content Management Technologies
--------------------------------------------------------------
According to an IDC report, the global mobile learner
population is expected to cross 850 million by 2009 (just two
years from now). That is a staggering figure.

Site of the Month
******************
The Site of the Month for August
(or should I say, Site of the year for 2007?) is http://www.brandbud.com/index.htm

This is the website of a Malaysian Interactive Agency
called Bud. What I liked most about this site was...Everything!
Seriously, almost everything wowed me. However, if I try to
sequence the excellent features of this site, I would probably
put Thematic Integration at the top.

1. The site is built around the concept of bud, the concept of
blossoming...and the entire site is built around the same theme.
The brands (Interactive Agencies work for brands) that they've
worked for, blend seamlessly into the theme.

2. Let me accompany you on a beautiful journey to discover the
bud world. Click the link above, to arrive at an island, the bud
island, and click ENTER. The site loads full-screen but with
the top-bar visible. What loads is bud city. The city and its
magnificent buildings are created in 3D. Each of these buildings
becomes clickable. While you are on this page, don't forget to check
out the little cars, the train, the digital billboard, the copter,
and the steamer animations.

3. I first checked the Bud headquarters. The page loads with a
line-work that displays a blossoming bud. The bud then transforms
into a building of about the same shape. The 3D animation of the
same building loads at the right hand side. Isn't it a subtle but
interesting way of displaying one's strengths? The top of the
building carries the logo of Bud.

4. Next, I recommend clicking the Auto city. This page displays
three buildings (that "grow" from the sketches of three different
buds.) Each of the building display a logo. Can you recognize
them? I could recognize the Lexus and the Mercedes logos. The
theme is simple and catchy - the bud, blossoms into buildings
(that form the bud city) and the buildings are the brands!
Please explore the remaining buildings at your leisure.

5. I now want to take you through some other parts of this site.
Please click the "Meet the Buddies" button in the top menu.
Each of buddies will load separately (I guess it's got to do
with the number of separate items that Flash can load
simultaneously.) Once the buddies have loaded, click each of
them. Check the effect. Isn't it cool? The selected buddy moves
to the front and brightens up when you rollover. When you click,
the details load and the character's position changes.

6. Now click "Philosophy Garden" to check the interactive
rollover effect. The garden drawing reveals the hidden colors
when tickled by the mouse. Another interesting detail is the
shape of the panels. They are all petal-shaped. The videos are
interesting too.

7. Click the "Service Street" to view a street scene, which is
logically animated. The billboards, the cyclist, the
train...everything is executed in a beautiful manner.

8. I think I should stop now and leave you to your own
endeavors. I hope you enjoyed navigating through this site
and found it an instructional experience.

If you haven't clicked the link yet, please do so now. Here's
the link once again...http://www.brandbud.com/index.htm
