WAVELENGTH -- The ID Newsletter of India -- January 2006
*********************************************************

Hello Friends,

Wish you a very happy New Year!

It was today, on January 04, an year ago, when the first
issue of Wavelength was published. I welcome you to the
First Anniversary Issue of Wavelength, the monthly
e-Newsletter for the Instructional Design and
eLearning community of India.

After briefly summarizing what we did this whole year, we
shall continue on our monthly voyage of discovery,
of course, with a hot cup of steaming coffee.

---------------------------------------
Wavelength Completes One Year!
---------------------------------------
A year ago, behind the same misty veil that hangs low
outside our windows these days, behind the veil that
prevents us from looking far and beyond and forcing us
to look within; Wavelength became a reality! A few ID
enthusiasts (68 to be precise) reached out to hold its
hands as Wavelength ventured out into the Indian eLearning
industry. Today Wavelength reaches more than
1050 eLearning professionals nation-wide. The love,
affection, and feedback that Wavelength receives from
you every month, gives it the strength to grow and become
more yours.

In July 2005, Wavelength became Wavelength eLearning
Consulting & Training (WeLCT), and launched the
Instructional Design & Content Development Certificate
(IDCWC) course, which received an overwhelming response.
This encouraged WeLCT to assess the requirements of
eLearning industry more closely, and bring out its second
course for the programming community: The ActionScript
Developer Certificate (ASDC) course started in October 2005.
The need for an advanced course in Flash ActionScript, led
WeLCT to the launch of Object Oriented Development in
ActionScript Certificate (OODAC) course for which
registrations are currently on.

Wavelength also conducted 10 workshops & corporate trainings
in the areas of Instructional Design and ActionScript.

-----------------------------
What's New This Month?
-----------------------------
Let us continue on our voyage. If you are well settled with
you hands closed around the hot coffee cup; let me begin
with the anniversary news.

1.If you know a graphic designer or a media enthusiast, send
them a New Year gift: a free subscription of Wavelength! Yes,
you guessed it right! We now have a lively MEDIA SECTION that
brings information on art concepts, graphic design concepts,
and media technologies. It also brings you the coolest links on
Flash, Photoshop, and 3d work, along with "The Dazzler" CONTEST.
Needless to say that the Surge Ahead (Hot Jobs) section will
now list hot vacancies for media too.

2.Wavelength also brings to you the best Indian online games
by linking to INNOKEN GAMES (http://www.innoken.com/games.htm)
the Indian company that creates highly interactive online games
and eLearning interactions. The site features 30 online
games (with 8 big, multi-level games) all developed in-house,
in India, but lauded worldwide. Next time, when you need a
break from work, proudly play a completely Indian game. I
recommend "Holi Hues" and "Challenge of the Cannibals."

The serial "eLearning Project Management," continues into its
second episode with highlight on the "recipe" of a wholesome
project manager. The Mystery of the Month article for this
issue is about the extremely obvious and seemingly
unbridgeable gap between ID theory and practice. I would look
forward to your views on the article.

If you wish to enroll for the Object-Oriented Development in
ActionScript 2.0 Certificate (OODAC) course, contact us.
http://www.vibrantwavelength.com/oodac_details.htm

The ActionScript Developer Certificate (ASDC) course group 3
and the Instructional Design & Content Writing Certificate
(IDCWC) course group 5 begin classes in January. Click on the
following links to view details:

http://www.vibrantwavelength.com/idcwc_details.htm
(for the IDCWC course.)

http://www.vibrantwavelength.com/actionscript_certificate.htm
(for the ASDC course.)

And yes, the next IDO workshop is being held on
January 08, 2006, Sunday at 2:00 PM. If you would like to
come over for a highly interactive, thought-provoking session
on instructional design, register for it now; and make
yourself free for 3 hours on Sunday. It could be more
fulfilling than watching "King Kong" at IMAX...who knows?
To register click on:
http://www.vibrantwavelength.com/idorworkshop6.htm

Oh, the coffee in your cup is becoming cold. I take your
leave now with a hope that we will continue to meet
every month, for a long-long time yet.

Thanks and Warm Regards,
Shafali R. Anand

Mystery of the Month
***********************

This month, the Mystery of the Month is the perceived gap
between ID theory and practice. It has flummoxed me, time
and again; it must've troubled you too...I am sure. The
question that we try to answer through this article is:
why this gap exists...and whether the rationale that is
tendered by some that theory doesn't help much in practice,
is correct!

We will try to illustrate some usage of one theory and one
model, and see how their conscious use in course design
and development can make our output more powerful.

Serials: eLearning Project Management: Episode II
****************************************************

1.In continuance with the theme of this serial, here's a
checklist for eLearning project managers.
"CHECKLIST: Managing e-Learning Projects" by Kevin Kruse is
a brief but clear list of what project managers should check
when a new project lands on their backs! Well...if you got
the pun, you are surely well read! Click on
http://www.e-learningguru.com/articles/art6_8.htm to access
this checklist.

2.Check out http://www.4pm.com/articles/pmtalk11-28-00.pdf to
read the article "Recipe for: Creme de la Project Manager."
This article first lists the raw ingredients that make a good
wholesome project manager then goes on to describe the
"garnishing"! Oops! The delicious aroma from the gourmet
project manager dish has affected my ability to write! Let me
fetch you another link before my instructional design
abilities transform into culinary skills.

3.Managing eLearning projects that employ languages other
than English can be a tough proposition. The article
"Taking an E-Learning Project Across Borders" by Debbie
Folaron, provides good tips on what you should and should
not do, when faced with such a situation. Click on
http://www.learningcircuits.org/2002/aug2002/folaron.html
to read this article.

---------------
ID Concepts
---------------
1.Is andragogy truly about adult learning? If it is, then
the question that we should ask is: when is it that
humans become adults? Is a fifty-year-old gentleman more
adult than a 25-year-old man? Is there a magic threshold
upon crossing which we become true adults? These questions
and answers to these questions are important because it's
our business to impart learning effectively. The answers to
these questions will lead us to correctly position our
courses and learning material. Click on
http://agelesslearner.com/intros/andragogy.html for a simple
and clear viewpoint on this discussion.

2.Another comprehensive article "Andragogy and Technology:
Integrating Adult Learning Theory As We Teach With Technology"
about the use of andragogy in today's online learning
environment should be useful to all who are associated with
eLearning. Click on
http://www.mtsu.edu/~itconf/proceed00/fidishun.htm for a
comprehensive discussion on how different characteristics of
adult learners should be taken into account while creating
content for online delivery.

------------------------
Language & Culture
------------------------
Just one link! Yes, but this link is the Dara Singh of all
links. Check it out.

1.The most exhaustive list of words with their British and
American meanings can be found at
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UK-US_Heterologues_A-Z. This link
lists not just the meanings, but also their origins and
connotations. Indian instructional designers, who create a
lot of content for the US and the UK, will find this list
a treasure!

--------------------
Writing Style
--------------------
1.If you click on
http://www.physics.ohio-state.edu/~wilkins/writing/Supp/dazzle.html
you will arrive at a page that lists the various dos and
don'ts of scientific presentation preparation (Dazzle 'em
with Style: The Art of Oral Scientific Presentation by
Robert R H Anholt). I think this is a great page to save in
your favorites if you deal with scientific/technical content
on and off. Those who work in the training industry could
also pick a few smart tips from this page.

2.http://www.dartmouth.edu/~webteach/articles/text.html provides
you some tips to create engaging web content. The article
gives a concise summary of the important factors to be
considered for chunking content (access, page length, and
printing) while noting the issues that are associated with it
(fragmentation, redundancy, excessive linking.) I think it's
a simple but good link for any one who is beginning
web writing.

3.If you too have been troubled by the question
"what is simple language," you should click on
http://www.gopdg.com/plainlanguage/intro.html to find out. This
page begins with a short reflective introduction on the
"variability" of plain language, then goes on to outline a
process for ensuring that your writing is clear and plain for
your audience. My favorite section is "Writing Guidelines,"
which lists some crystal clear guidelines for crystal
clear writing!

*******************************
Technology Section
*******************************
--------------------------------------------------
Learning Content Creation Technologies
--------------------------------------------------
1.It's in the air...what? Oh it's only Breeze! They call it
the communication technology of tomorrow - It delivers rich
multimedia content over the web through Flash Player
(when I tried downloading a couple of breeze demos, my
browser stopped responding - but then I must've been on a
slower connection - Breeze is the technology of tomorrow.
Right? BTW, it requires a minimum of 512 MB RAM for
faithful delivery.) Well, what it can accomplish is that
those who have little knowledge of programming can use
PowerPoint, Flash, recorded video, along with synchronous
communication methods such as screen sharing and text chats
to deliver online trainings and presentations more
effectively.

Click on http://www.figleaf.com/products/Macromedia-Breeze.cfm
to read about Macromedia Breeze. You can also visit Macromedia
site at http://www.macromedia.com/go/gnavtray_breeze_home, but
if you are on a slow connection or your system RAM is lower
than 512 MB, stay with the first URL:-)

--------------------------------------------------
Learning Content Management Technologies
--------------------------------------------------
1.I don't know whether this link should be included in the
content management or the content creation section. I choose
content management section as I feel future trends and
corresponding risks are to be projected and managed!

Well, the link is http://www.nmc.org/pdf/2005_Horizon_Report.pdf.
The New Media Consortium has published this report, which
outlines four areas that will gain importance in the next
4 to 5 years. Some of the important trends identified in this
report are: ubiquitous wireless-ness, intelligent searching,
and educational gaming. This report explores the changes that
these trends will bring about in learning methods. I suggest
that you download the pdf to your system, print it, and read
through it! The information can make you the most sought
after person for a while (Is it really an incentive?)

2."Learning Management Systems: The wrong place to start
learning" by George Siemens can be read at
http://www.elearnspace.org/Articles/lms.htm. I liked this
article because it brings in the perspective of learning into
what has become mainly a part of the technological domain
(featuring this link in the technology section proves this
point.) The article begins by listing the drawbacks of an
LMS, then it moves on to what the additional characteristics
can make LMSs more desirable; it then lists the
characteristics of an ideal learning environment. Read this
article to know learning management systems better.

**************************
Media Section (NEW!)
**************************

So far, Wavelength didn't have a media section. I've been
admonished for this lapse a lot many times. The admonitions
made me introspect.

Why have I gone through the whole year, without reaching
out to those who make the eLearning world beautiful? Without
the imagination of a graphic designer, the world of
eLearning would be a sleepy, boring place to be in; without
the colors and forms that give shape to an instructional
designer's visualization, eLearning would be dreary and
bleak. Why then Wavelength didn't have a media section?

The question is valid. The answer will probably sound like
an excuse, nevertheless, here it is: I was working at a
rather killing pace. The assignments, the corporate
trainings, the IDCWC classes, and the newsletter; they all
had me submerged. But I have resurfaced now, and though I
am slightly short of breath, I think it's time I made
amends. With these words, and with my sincere apologies for
the delay, I present to you the media section of Wavelength.

This section will bring to you resource links in the
following three areas:

* Art Concepts

* Graphic Design Concepts (of course, they are different
from art concepts!)

* Media Technology

In addition to this, there shall be URLs for Flash Fans,
Photoshop Pros, and 3d Dons (current as well as prospective.)
If you've got a web page that you are proud of, send
me the link! Wavelength's "The Dazzler" contest is open now.
To enter click on
http://www.vibrantwavelength.com/media_section.htm#dazzler

So here we go...

-----------------
Art Concepts
-----------------
If you are a graphic designer without formal art qualifications,
this site will introduce you to the principles of art. Even
if you know them all, I still recommend that you click
http://www.sanford-artedventures.com/study/g_art_principles.html
to read and explore the eight principles. The visual dimension
that has been added into these pages, makes for enjoyable
learning. I think the instructional designer who worked on
these pages knew the audience well! BTW, the link "Proportion"
takes you to a page that details the process of drawing faces.

----------------------------------
Graphic Design Concepts
----------------------------------
"First Principles of Interaction Design" at
http://www.asktog.com/basics/firstPrinciples.html takes you
on an exploration of the main principles of graphic design.
Don't let the simplicity of the article title fool you; this
site doesn't just introduce the principles on the surface,
it takes you on a deep-sea excursion! When you resurface,
do remember to save the page in your favorites. Nostalgia
makes me save it to mine.

------------------------
Media Technology
------------------------
This article "Becoming and online media mogul"
by Clive Shepherd, reviews streaming from all perspectives.
It not only defines streaming in a very lucid manner for
the uninitiated, it also provides information on both the on
as well as flip side of using it. The article also provides
opinions of experts on the marketability of streaming media.
The article quotes Andrew Robinson (UK Managing Director for
Unit.net) to underline the importance of streaming media as
not just a carrier of video, but also audio, Flash animations,
pdfs, and so on. All this could lead to the eLearning media
designer's media palette changing substantially in
the coming years.

--------------------
For Flash Fans
--------------------
If you haven't met the Whirlgirl, Kia Cross, you've missed
out on some fantastic Flash action. Click on
http://www.whirlgirl.com to go on a thrilling all-Flash
adventure with the Whirlgirl!

---------------------------
For Photoshop Pros:
---------------------------
If you are in love with Photoshop and would like to use
it for coloring portraits,
http://www.deviantart.com/view/26811711/ is a link you
shouldn't miss. This example of Manga art takes you through
the steps of coloring in a very "visual" manner!

--------------------------------------
For 3d Dons: (The Dazzler!)
--------------------------------------
If you love automobiles click on
http://www.geocities.com/gmodkar/Index3d.htm to visit the
Design Studio of Gautam Modkar. You can also view his
Hummer at http://www.3dshop.com/cgi-bin/Gallery/show?Vehicle=545
Congratulations, Gautam! Keep the Indian flag flying high!

If you feel that your portfolio could make us proud of being
Indian, send me the link at shafali@vibrantwavelength.com.
Wavelength does reserve the right to decide whether the link will
become "The Dazzler!", but then if you have a gem that can
"dazzle" India, we promise to display it on a gold-brocaded
cushion of silk! Read more about the contest at:
http://www.vibrantwavelength.com/media_section.htm#dazzler

Site of the Month
**********************

The New Year begins with a fresh and pink site. Poornima Murthy,
Senior Consultant, NIIT, sent in the URL for this site, I
took one look at it and I was smitten by its simplicity and
functionality! Thanks Poornima, it is a fantastic site!

Ladies and Gentlemen...The Site of the Month for January 2006
is...http://www.thomaspink.co.uk eyyyyyyyy!

1.When you click on http://www.thomaspink.co.uk, you come to a
pink site with black text. I know it's a bold combination, and
I know that all graphic designers who subscribe to Wavelength,
are right now looking askance at their computer monitors. Pink
& Black? Hold on - there is a reason behind the bold selection:
ThomasPink's corporate color theme (evident in their tags,
packing material, carry bags) is pink and black!

2.While you are critically looking at the site, check out the
dashed line...garment lovers and fashion freaks will confirm
your belief that it is the depiction of stitches; Yes!
ThomosPink is the luxury shirt manufacturer of London.

3.Click on "FLASH-HIGH SPEED > United States" link. The
reason I ask you to choose this link is, that it gives the
prices in US Dollars, which makes more sense to the Indian
eLearning professional, than UK Pounds!

4.Check out the lighter shade of pink used for the Flash
file. The indentation gives a look of an inverted seam
or a pleat!

5.The Mens and Womens labels at the top clearly demarcate the
planetary divide between Mars and Venus - With Ladies Pajamas
and shirts at US Dollar 150 approximately, Pink is premium.

6.But before you figure out what you'd like to buy,
wouldn't you like to look through their range? Select a
section (Mens or Womens) - Select an article, and browse
through the available range using the search panel (shaped as
a garment price ticket which swings down in its
characteristic style).

7.Depending on your selection (color, style, pattern), the
site retrieves images of the articles and displays it for
you. A rollover displays a close-up of the design and the
price, and a click gives you a no-nonsense view of the
article in a white-based new window.

8.All articles and their details are loaded externally.
I visited the site at three separate occasions during the
past month, and found that their inventory keeps changing.
The database that works behind this site is updated
regularly, to keep the information on the site, current
and fresh.

9.They have a well-implemented shopping cart. The good
news is that delivery, which is made through FedEx
(premium image!), is free above any shopping worth
US Dollars 280!

10.The navigation is extremely comfortable, the amount of
white space (okay...the pink space) is just right, and the
menus are tastefully synchronized with the
theme of ThomasPink.

11.This site is an extremely good example of how the
complete range of a company's products can be displayed
on web without sacrificing the site's responsiveness
to change.

I should stop now...I am sure that you would like to
discover the hidden delights of site on your own!
Click on http://www.thomaspink.co.uk to explore a corporate
site, which is completely created and implemented
through Flash.

Laugh-a-little
********************
1.Here are a few novelist jokes for my instructional
designer and content writer friends. I know you must be
quite mad at me for not adding instructional designer jokes
in this section, but you know how it is. We are perceived to
be serious, philosophical, philanthropic souls, devoted to
perfectionism. Technical writer jokes, writer jokes, professor
jokes, editor jokes, author jokes, publisher jokes...even
novelist jokes exist, but there aren't any instructional
designer jokes! Do you know what I think about this...I think
we are smart, we don't worry about such trivial details, and
we will definitely enjoy http://www.apc.net/ia/znovel.htm!
Way to go...

2.This one page will keep you rolling with laughter,
especially if you are a programmer! Click on
http://www.workjoke.com/projoke20.htm and enjoy! I specially
recommend "Ten Commandments for Stress Free Programming."
WYSIWYMGIYRRLAAGW but not on this page! Yes, the statement
is perfectly valid and intelligent! How? You figure it out.

3.Designers will find the list of "Unspoken Graphic Design
Rules" immensely useful. It will provide them the comfort
of precedence; "If something's happening to me, it's already
happened to every one else before!" So cheer up, click on
http://www.biz-community.com/Jokes.aspx?l=196&c=13, print the
list, and tack it to your soft board. Next time, when any of
these 37 rules materializes, show the list to
your project manager!

out with my "Nifty Neigbors!" Beat my best score of 1.57...and
if you want to challenge yourself further, try breaking Ali's
and Bryce's at 2.13 and 2.33!!! Do they use the mouse or

I hope Innoken Games (http://www.innoken.com/games.htm) keep
you smiling, laughing, and playing all through the year!
