Hello Friends,

Welcome to this edition of Wavelength - The Indian Instructional Design Newsletter.

We are waiting for the summer to come…and then for it to leave in haste. In India, summer is an uninvited, unwelcome guest. Yet, summer has its share of virtues too. Summer thaws us into action. Winter devours our energy and makes us lethargic. Then spring tries to pull us out of our lethargic state; it caresses us with its soft and cool breeze and it asks us to pack our picnic baskets. It pulls our minds towards fun and frolic; and away from work. Summer snatches us away from spring; brings us indoor – back to our workstations. Summer is good…isn’t it? We prefer our workstations to the outdoors, and work gets done!

We’ve had a busy month. Well, it should’ve been so. With the Comprehensive Content Review Services (CCRS) and Flash Certificate Course (FCC) underway, things were as hectic as we had expected them to be.

Wavelength’s Media Newsletter took its first step with the April 2007edition and reached 412 mailboxes. If you haven’t subscribed to it yet, please do so now. This month onwards, the media section of the ID newsletter will no longer be there. Instead, we invite all those who are interested in media-related information to subscribe to “Wavelength – The Media Newsletter of India”. This newsletter will bring you information in the areas of art, graphic design, graphic design technologies, along with a media quiz and a cartoon contest! Expand your horizons by subscribing to the media newsletter.

To begin…let me ask you a question. Do you enjoy stories? Is your answer “yes”? Most of us like to listen to stories. The level of interest and excitement that a story generates depends on two important factors – the storytelling skills of the storyteller and the storyline. Now let us review the use of storytelling in classrooms. Almost all of us (the trainers and the content writers) have experienced the magic of storytelling in a learning situation. At times we’ve marveled at the ability of the trainer or the content writer to conceptualize, visualize, develop and tell a story that casts a spell on the audience.

How is it done? For starters – read the Wavelength article, “The Long & Short of Instructional Storytelling”. This article introduces the anatomy of a good story and then explores its potential as a learning device. It ends by underlining the fact that the design and development of an instructional story can be achieved through a logical step-by-step process.

This of course brings us to the logical instructional story design process that can help us infuse life into our trainings and workshops through carefully designed stories. Can we learn the process of combining the elements of storytelling in a manner that will enable us to provide instruction more effectively? To answer this question, Wavelength brings to you a one-day training titled “Instructional Storytelling for Trainers & Content Developers.”

Instructional Storytelling for Trainers & Content Developers – 1 Day Open Workshop:
This training will be conducted on June 16, 2007 (Saturday) at Wavelength, Noida. Read the details of this training at http://www.vibrantwavelength.com/instructionalstorytelling_training.htm.
