Welcome to the December issue of Wavelength.
Winter though delayed considerably, is finally here. I asked
December how it managed to accomplish the feat of bringing us the
seemingly unwilling to arrive, winter? “After all, isn’t
it November that is supposed to bring winter to us?” I asked
it. December shrugged off the little snowflakes that it had gathered
on its journey from the mountains to the plains, and smiled at me.
“I like to achieve the impossible,” December smiled.
“November has a lot of experience in bringing winter to us.
Yet experience has to be used to create new knowledge in the changing
times. There have been climatic changes, and winter blamed humans
for causing it. It was on strike and didn’t want to arrive
this year. November knew about the climate change; but it didn’t
keep its knowledge updated – it didn’t know about the
measures that humans were taking to make this world a better place
for their children and their fellow creatures! I knew about these
measures, and so I was able to convince winter to come along. I
kept up with the times.”
December’s message is for all of us. All of us have our
bit to do when it comes to saving this planet for our children and
also all the other species that inhabit this planet. We were created
as the most intelligent species to be entrusted with the responsibility
of keeping this planet alive for humans as well as for all other
living beings. This delayed winter is a warning to us…let’s
heed December’s advice. Let us do our bit to add value to
our dear Earth.
Our bit to add value is to help the world learn…effectively.
This is what we, the instructional designers and the trainers, do.
We develop content and deliver it in an effective manner. When learning
is effective, it is retained; it is applied; it is developed further;
it is used to create new knowledge! But then, trainers mostly address
the adult audience, and work with the assumption that the learner
would invariably be interested in learning. What happens when the
learner (or the trainee) isn’t interested! How do we then
add value to this world? How do we harness the energy of the heckler?
This month, the Mystery of the Month article
“Training – The Dark Side” delves into the
psyche of the heckler and tries to arrive as some instructionally
designed ways of bringing the hecklers into the mainstream discussions
of any training program.
Wavelength held the Autumn Training Workshops in November.
