From the Editor's Desk - May
2008                                         Previous Editorials >>>

Welcome to this edition of Wavelength.

This year, May has been uncharacteristically mild. With about 160 cm of rainfall the sweet and sour yet my dear Delhi sat ensconced in the soft cool lap of the otherwise hot and angry May. While raindrops pattered on the hot brow of the workaholic Delhi, its citizens slowed down and looked around. I did. I looked around to review what I had slipped down on my list of priorities, and I was horrified to discover that the things that I valued most figured as the lowest priority items!

This jolted me into action, and I recreated my list. I restructured my day to break it into different periods, each meant to handle a definite priority area. I’ve been breathing easy for the last two weeks. Life has become more beautiful and manageable. May has done a lot for me. I salute it for showering me with new, inspiring thoughts.

One of these thoughts made me consider the overall learning scenario in India. A few days ago, TOI has a front-page new item, which stated that the board results have been close to 100% (this made me think of the pressure that those miniscule “not-passed” students would experience – in our days, enough would fail to ensure that failing was never a stigma.) The close to 100% results, the new item said, was accomplished through a focus on concepts.

Concepts. They are the foundational building blocks of learning. It’s a wonder that learning happens at all without a focus on concepts. In fact, we often use terms that we don’t understand conceptually; thus, we try to achieve mastery without setting the foundation first. This month’s Article of the Month “Education, Training, and Learning”, introduces and explains the three terms conceptually.
