WAVELENGTH -- The ID Newsletter of India -- July 2009
***********************************************************

Hello Friends,

Welcome to this edition of Wavelength.

July usually ends with a well-fed earth that looks beautiful
decked in luscious green. This July has been pathetically
different. We saw the parched ground watching the cloudless
skies, waiting for rains that didn't come for a
long time - then it rained violently for some. Monsoon
this year seems to have learned its lessons from the ancient
Chinese torturers. But if we look at it closely, we as a
collective whole are responsible for bringing upon ourselves,
these vagaries of the weather.

We forsook our future for our short-term gains. We are still
doing it, and we shall continue to do so. We've
sub-consciously chosen to remain blind to the impact of our
actions. Our collective consciousness has its roots in our
individual thoughts, so this blindness characterizes each
one of us. We are all driven to find the quickest and the
easiest route to success - no matter what the consequences.
For many of us, this shortcut to happiness turns out to be
a mirage and we find ourselves being sucked into the
quagmire of endless pain stemming from the tag of a mediocre.

I won't be able to count the number of times, I chose the
path that could've led me to mediocrity. By the time I
learned to recognize the symptoms, I had already wasted
precious time over my short-term selection. Wavelength's
Mystery of the Month article for July, is born of my deep
desire to see you evaluate the map between your true calling
and your job as an instructional designer. Read "Should you
become an Instructional Designer?" at http://www.vibrantwavelength.com/instructional_designer.htm
The four parameters mentioned in the article help you measure
your growth potential as an instructional designer.

Wavelength is currently receiving applications for its
1-Month Content Writing for the Web Certificate Online
(CWWC Online) course. The session begins on October 01, 2009.
If you are a writer, empower your ability with this course.

Wavelength Article: Should you become an Instructional Designer?
---------------------------------------------------------------
If you are contemplating a career as an instructional
designer (or someone close to you is,) or if you are a
mint-fresh instructional designer, this month's Mystery of
the Month article is for you. It outlines the four
parameters on which you should judge your growth potential
as an instructional designer.

Read "Should you become an Instructional Designer?" at http://www.vibrantwavelength.com/instructional_designer.htm
to figure out whether an ID is what you were meant to be.

The Cognitive Excursion
****************************
How cool are you? In our world, you aren't considered cool
when you chillax or go out for some cbats (thanks to TOI,
I now know what the terms mean!) In our world, you are
considered cool (or not) based on what you carry in that
compact little carry-case called your brain. So find out
whether you're cognitively cool by challenging yourself at http://www.vibrantwavelength.com/cog_ex/cognitive_excursion.htm

ID Concepts
--------------------
Is instructional design practical...or in other words:

1. Do instructional designers really use the ID theories?
2. Are the instructional design theories still relevant
in the changing learning scenario of today?

The essay, "What is Instructional Design Theory?" by
Prof. J Cronj at http://hagar.up.ac.za/catts/learner/peterdl/ID%20Theory.htm
is an interesting and enlightening write-up that helps
answer these questions.

(I love the George Lucas quote that the author has used at
the beginning of the essay. The eLearning instructional
designers need to break out of the architect mold and don
the garb of a carpenter - we need to build, reflect,
review, demolish, and build again - only then will our
audience leave the show happy and satisfied.

----------------------------------
Language & Culture
------------------------------------
The increasing incidents of the producers, directors,
musicians, and even a professor or two becoming embroiled
in the plagiarism issue, make us think that ignoring
copyright could well be a cultural issue for us. I mean many
of our esteemed plagiarists must be beginning to take the
title as mark of respect.

But copyright violation is a grave issue...in our industry.

Are you confused by the term Copyright?
Read "A brief intro to copyright" by Brad Templeton at: http://www.templetons.com/brad/copyright.html

You could find the text of the Indian Copyright Act (1957)
at http://www.education.nic.in/CprAct.pdf.

(Note: You should also check out the subsequent amendments
to this act.)

The implementation of eLearning often finds us grappling
with the question - Should technology define the manner in
which learning should be transferred or should learning
lead technology? Read "How Will You Use Technology to Support
Your Vision of Learning?" at http://www.ncrtec.org/capacity/guidewww/howwill.htm

Cognitive Footprints
**************************
Carl Gustav Jung, the proponent of the Jungian Philosophy,
was born on July 26, 1885. Jung had a troubled childhood.
His mother had an unpredictable temperament and he was
closer to his father than to his mother. In his childhood
he had developed a fear of learning and education, but by
reasoning with himself, he overcame his problem. He also
thought of himself as a mix of two personalities - separated
by a century in between. Despite these and other issues, at a
young age he was drawn towards psychology as he felt that
psychology explained the connection between biology and
spiritualism.

After the first World War (during which he served as an
Army Doctor,) Jung became a traveler. Around 1940, Jung also
visited India, where he became enchanted by the Hindu Philosophy.

Jung and Freud often discussed their ideas through letters.
Their correspondence lasted for about half a decade. They
had some major disagreements on their perception of the
unconscious. Jung is known for proposing the concepts of
intraversion and extraverson, and also the collective
unconscious. The most popular application created on the
basis of his concepts is the MBTI or the Meyers-Briggs
Type Indicator.

During these high and dry times, we need some humor - and not
the martini dry humor of the Jonathan Mann variety, but of
juicy kind that refreshes and then soothes.

Here's some for those suffering from Writer's Cramp:
