WAVELENGTH – The ID Newsletter of India – June 2008
***********************************************************************

Hello friends,

Welcome to this edition of Wavelength.

Has the Monsoon reached you? It has? It hasn't? You aren't
sure? In Delhi, we discovered the arrival of Monsoon
through the Meteorological Department's announcement. It
rained for the first 12 days of the month, but the rain
wasn't Monsoon; and then it rained on the 13th day, and
it suddenly was Monsoon. The difference - Monsoons arrive
from the South-East! The other rains were due to the western
disturbances!

The difference between the trainer and the instructional
designer is however not this small. This month's Wavelength
article, "The Trainer & The Instructional Designer - Two
Sides of the Same Coin!
" explores the differences between
the stereotypical trainer and instructional designer, and
attempts to outline the advantages that accrue to a trainer
when he or she learns and applies the instructional design
principles.

We've been receiving a steady flow of inquiries for our
Three-Day ID and eLearning workshop, and they have
motivated us to organize this training program once again,
in August 2008. You are welcome to write to us for the
details of this training program. I have a small request
to make - If you are interested in attending the workshop
or sponsoring participants for it, please send us your
queries as soon as you can. It will help us complete the
registrations in time, and you too will have an
opportunity to schedule your time accordingly.

Here are the details of this workshop!

Mystery of the Month
***********************
If you are a trainer, you must be aware of the latest
buzzword, which is instructional design. What may have
worried you however is, how instructional design would
impact your life and whether the impact would be positive
or not.

Though you must've experienced the euphoria that
accompanies acquisition of knowledge, you still wonder,
whether or not you should put yourself through the ordeal
of learning and mastering this exotic sounding skill;
because as an adult learner you want to know whether the
investment of your time result in satisfying returns!

If the above scenario fills you with a sense of deja vu,
then click http://www.vibrantwavelength.com/trainer_instructional_designer.htm
to read the Wavelength article, "The Trainer &
The Instructional Designer - Two Sides of the Same Coin!
"

The Cognitive Excursion ( NEW EPISODES!!! )
*******************************************
Once again, the Cognitive Excursion is ready to enthrall
you with the new episodes of HIVE, CLICK, and PEARL.
I would like to tell you that in popularity, HIVE has
emerged the leader; but CLICK and PEARL are not far behind.
CLICK and PEARL are thematic puzzles that should interest
the trainers as well as the designers.

----------------------------------
Language & Culture
----------------------------------
The experiences of a writer mold his or her writing, and
experiences are always born within a cultural context.
Thus, we can infer that a writer's culture influences the
writer's work. Two excellent examples of this phenomenon
are Doris Lessing and Wilbur Smith. I recommend that you
randomly select a book from each author, read the two
books, and then read the biographies of the two authors.
You will discover how their lives molded their books!

On a rather different and more scientific note, click
http://www.terradaily.com/reports/Culture_Influences_Brain_Function_999.html
to read "Culture Influences Brain Function" to explore
how culture influences the brain activity.

------------------------------
Writing Style
------------------------------
"Neither pedantic nor wild?" by Michael McNay is an
introduction to Guardian's style guide. This crisp
introduction accentuates the importance of writing style
by talking about the in-house style of the Guardian.

If you are not closely involved with content writing,
it may be difficult for you to accept the fuss on writing
style! But as a content writer, it is the axis around
which most of your work-life dances! Click

to read this article, and then click http://www.guardian.co.uk/styleguide/page/0,5817,184844,00.html

Site of the Month
******************
The Site of the Month for June 2008 is another unique site.
This site is different! So ask me what's new? Don't I say
this every month? Believe me, this site is as different as
the other sites were, and more!

You don't believe me?
Click http://www.tokyoplastic.com to verify my claim.

There is one catch though. This site isn't for the impatient
among us. There are pre-loaders that provide you ample
opportunity to catch on with your email, friends, and do
whatever else you like to do best. With that warning, I invite
you to begin your exploration.

1. So, if the first pre-loader is done, and if you see some
Japanese (I assume) text; then click it. Most probably it
reads, "ENTER".

2. Next you find yourself on a screen with a rusty splatter!
Click WEBSITE to enter this awe-inspiring exhibition of
vector art and animation.

3. Are you wondering what you should be doing next? Well,
click the red dot, the "bindu". Now click the text above
the revolving Chairperson! The chairperson disappears and a
Japanese doll appears - the tree forms out of the python.
(If you think that I am talking nonsense, you are still not
at the site. You are missing out on a great deal of
fun...so make a move and load the site.)

4. Now this tree is the menu. The buttons are as intriguing
as buttons can get. Well, now you know what has to be done.
Click the buttons, browse to the different pages - whenever
you see the red dot, click it; and enjoy a different kind of
experience.

5. While you are at this site, observe the following:

* The wonderful synchronization of the sounds with the animations.
* The exquisite execution of the animations.
* The simplicity of vector art.

6. I am sure that this site will enhance your perspective on
creativity.

I think that this site doesn't require a guided tour - The
experience lies completely in the affective zone. So if you've
still not clicked the URL, here it is once
again - http://www.tokyoplastic.com

Enjoy and Learn!
