WAVELENGTH -- The ID Newsletter of India -- Jun 2010
***********************************************************

Hello Friends,

Welcome to this edition of Wavelength.

Shhh...Listen closely. Do you hear the knock? That's the
Monsoon knocking at our doors. Close your eyes. Do you
feel soft cool fingers touching your cheeks ever so
lightly? That's the breeze that accompanies the rains. When
Monsoon follows an especially cruel summer, she seems to
transform into a fairy godmother - the answer to all your
prayers.

If you too are feeling energetic and happy, if you too are
looking forward to a beautiful monsoon season followed by
a lovelier autumn, I have an announcement that could make
this season productive as well. But before I do that, I
should tell you about Wavelength's Article of the Month
for June 2010. This article is written for those readers
who have recently become Content Reviewers. The
transformation from writing to reviewing isn't easy to
come by. A fresh reviewer often finds herself wondering
if she could've done a better job on writing the
content - and unfortunately her reviews begin to speak
her mind. This of course, doesn't help the content writer,
and it also casts the well meaning yet novice reviewer
in a bad light.

Read the article, "Effective Instructional Design Reviews"
at http://www.vibrantwavelength.com/articles/effective-instructional-design-reviews.htm
for some useful tips on the matter of content reviews.

Now the Announcement...

Wavelength is announcing the much-awaited Instructional
Design workshop for Trainers. The workshop shall be
organized in August. If you would like to attend this
workshop or sponsor participants for it,
write to us at connect [at] vibrantwavelength [dot] com.

Wavelength Article: Effective Instructional Design Reviews
-----------------------------------------------------------
If you've recently got out of your content developer's
suit and donned the reviewer's mantle, then you probably
are worried sick about what you should comment upon and how
you should be putting your thoughts across. The Wavelength
article, "Effective Instructional Design Reviews" at
http://www.vibrantwavelength.com/articles/effective-instructional-design-reviews.htm
helps you chalk-out a battle-plan.

Have you ever been to that little Gaulish village that
still stands proud and independent because its inhabitants
flush with their druid's power-potion, pummel the Romans
to powder?

If you haven't, you've not experienced the magic of subtle
humor combined with great illustration. You've missed out
on a lot, my friend - and so I recommend that you leave
everything, bunk that meeting, get on your mechanical horse,
and gallop to the nearest bookshop. Buy the first Asterix
you see, and come back. Then read it. And when you are done,
come back for your cognitive excursion at

Using Games in eLearning - Part I
- How Games and eLearning Came Together?

<<<Quick Excerpt>>>
There was a time when Online Content looked and also
functioned exactly the way a book did! There would be some
content on the screen, and when the learner pressed the NEXT
button (or "flipped" the page) the content would change...

Of course you know all about the Learning Styles. There are
three learning styles - visual, auditory, and kinesthetic.
Which style applies best to you?
Find out at http://people.usd.edu/~bwjames/tut/learning-style/stylest.html

The concept of Multiple Intelligences is closely related
to that of Learning Styles. Read about Gardner's Multiple
Intelligences at http://www.ldpride.net/learningstyles.MI.htm#Multiple%20Intelligences%20Explained

Language & Culture
------------------------------------
"Language and Thought Processes" at http://anthro.palomar.edu/language/language_5.htm
is a very interesting and informative article on how culture
influences our perceptions through language. This article
is a page in the collection "Language and Culture: An
Introduction to Human Communication" at http://anthro.palomar.edu/language/Default.htm

------------------------------
Writing Style
------------------------------
Do you have a writing style?
If your answer to this question is yes, you are in for
trouble; for in our industry, you often need to strip
your writing of its style and personality.

Paradoxically, even this lack of style, is called "style".
If you haven't come across it yet click http://www.cs.uky.edu/~raphael/writing.html
to read "Hints on Writing Style". Most of the Technical
Writing tips can be applied to eLearning content
writing too:)

Content Management is an everyday reality these days. Almost
every organization can boast of a Learning Management System,
complete with an authoring environment. The definition of
an LMS (courtesy: Wikipedia) is: "a software application for
the administration, documentation, tracking, and reporting of
training programs, classroom and online events, e-learning
programs, and training content."

If you are battling with the task of selecting an LMS, click

to read a useful article (a six-page pdf) from Bersin Associates.

"There is nothing higher than reason." Immanuel Kant.

Immanuel Kant was born on April 22, 1724 - about 300 years
ago; yet his influence on the study of knowledge and
learning remains as strong as ever. Almost all his life,
Kant earned his living by working as a teacher, but despite
his killing schedule of lectures (about 30 hours a week,)
he remained a prolific writer.

His important works include:
* Critique of Pure Reason (1787) - His explanation of the
phenomenon of learning, given in this book, paved way for
cognitivism and constructivism.
* Fundamental Principles of the Metaphysics of Morals
* Critique of Practical Reason
* Critique of Judgment

Read Kant's biography at http://www.notablebiographies.com/Jo-Ki/Kant-Immanuel.html
The Full text of "Critique of Pure Reason" along with some
of his other works, is available at http://www.marxists.org/reference/subject/ethics/kant/
