:::::::::::: NEW Online Course from Wavelength ::::::::::::
Hello Friends,
Welcome to this edition of Wavelength.
Yesterday, the weather in Delhi changed for the better. There
was an unexpected drizzle followed by a happy cool breeze. I
hope that the economic weather too would take a similar
though currently unexpected turn for the better.
The beautiful weather brought a lot of positive thoughts to
my mind. It motivated me. In fact, it motivated me to write
about motivation. This month's Mystery of the Month article,
"Esteem Needs & Learner Motivation" at
http://www.vibrantwavelength.com/esteem_needs_learner_motivation.htm
discusses the what, how, and why of learner motivation for
the professional learner.
In February, I had brought you the news of Wavelength's
Content Writing for the Web Certificate Online course. The
response for this course both in terms of recommendations as
well as inquiries has been terrific. Thank you. We will do our
best to make this course first meet and then exceed your
expectations.
I would once again like to provide you the details
of this course:

Mystery of the Month
***********************
It isn't easy to establish learner motivation, especially
when your learner is a professional whose objective of
learning is the fulfillment of an esteem need instead
of a safety/security need. The Mystery of the Month
article for March, Esteem
Needs & Learner Motivation at
http://www.vibrantwavelength.com/esteem_needs_learner_motivation.htm
discusses what it takes to satisfy this audience.

The Cognitive Excursion

world history, the art of logic, and the logic of
language.

I am a great believer in the power of curiosity arousal.
It works...all the time. In fact, I haven't ever seen it fail.
"Using Instructional Design Strategies To Foster Curiosity"
by Arnone, Marilyn P., at http://www.vtaide.com/png/ERIC/Instructional-Design-n-Curiosity.htm
is a wonderful things-to-do list for curiosity arousal.
The article begins by differentiating "specific" curiosity
from "diverse" curiosity, and establishing the need to
arouse specific curiosity for motivating the learners.
----------------------------------
Language & Culture
------------------------------------
At http://www.ascd.org/publications/books/198186/chapters/Culture_and_Style.aspx
you will find a chapter from the book,
"Marching to Different Drummers" by Pat Burke Guild and
Stephen Garger. This excerpt discusses the impact of culture
on the learner's preferences; and how the teachers may
address this issue. Though set in the American context, at
the root level, the handling of the cross-cultural learning
issues is relevant to all instructional designers.

Writing Style

Among the elite audience of this newsletter, there are some
who aspire to write fiction. The essay "Writing Well"
at
Author Dan Simmons website is enlightening as well as
inspiring. Click http://www.dansimmons.com/writing_welll/writing.htm
to read it. Don't miss the little link at the top that
reads "Previous installments." We've found a treasure-chest,
haven't we? Thanks Mr. Simmons.

I am sure that you've all heard of Kindle - the eBook
Reader from Google. Though we still can't use Kindle in
India, it's important that we recognize the importance of
eBooks as one of the important learning mediums of

Site of the Month
******************
The Site of the Month for March 2009 is http://www.reebok.com/IN/#
This is a data-driven site, which provides you information
on its offerings, allowing you to see the images of its
products while reading about their features; but unlike
most data-driven sites, it looks good.
Let's look at some of its features.
1. There is a little menu at the top. It reads, "Women",
"Men", "Kids", "Sports", and "Classics".
Roll your mouse
over the menu items and watch the effect. I think that
the effect is really smooth.
2. Now click any of the three icons at the left. Try
clicking the first one, which reads "Women's Fitness".
3. Click "On the Move" and select, "Mix and Match."
There's a well-executed click and dress game here. I do
think that the number of dress-styles used for this game
is somewhat limited though, but the aesthetic sense shines
through the carefully thought of perspectives and the
corresponding rollover effects.
4. Explore "Reebok & Cirque du Soleil Experience"
to click
"Group Exercise". View some difficult-to-do exercises
and
become "fit-to-fly":)
5. Now explore the animated menu at the top. Select any
of the menu items. A panel with the different styles of
the selected product opens up where you can view
the details.
6. Don't miss the scrolling pane below. You can categorize
the selection to be viewed on the basis of colors, products,
lifestyle and so on. Explore the items. Check the details.
You'll find there's a lot to learn from the viewpoint
of design.
7. Now click the x button at the top of this panel to
close it, and explore the site further.
I would now leave you and the site alone - so that you
can get to know each other better.

Once upon a time people thought that:
* Telephone is useless.
* No one would like a computer at home.
* Who would like to see an actor talk?
So what? You may ask.
Only this that the big bosses of the biggest companies in
the telephone, computer, and movies industries,
respectively, thought and said so. Find more about
what big people with their big mouths once said.
